Tool Steel
Do you need tool steel for the production of tools or in mold making?
Our range of tool steels covers a wide range. Be it unalloyed or alloyed cold work steel, high speed steel or even already machined variants. We can also easily supply rare grades, special dimensions such as over- or under-lengths, as well as rust-resistant alternatives for your tool or mold making needs.
With us you get the right material, tailor-made according to your individual requirements.
Cold work steel
Used at temperatures up to 200°C
Cold work steel is a tool steel which can be used for machining in a soft annealed condition. This material can be divided in alloyed and unalloyed cold work steel.
Generally, processing is possible at a surface temperature of up to 200°C.
You have to choose the suitable material according to your tools – whether you are using for example hand tools, moulding dies (unalloyed) or cutting tools, tap drills, stamps (unalloyed), etc.
HSM® supplies you with cold work steel in various delivery forms from round, flat and square bars up to sheets in different dimensions or even special dimensions!

Hot work steel
Alloyed tool steel
Hot work steels are alloyed tool steel which are characterized by their especially high resilience. They differ from unalloyed tool steel by their application temperature of 200° – 600°C.
Hot work steels are especially characterized by:
- Structural consistency
- Temper resistance
- Resilience at elevated temperatures
- Tensile strength at elevated temperatures
- Creep strength
- Hot crack susceptibility
- Oxidation resistance
HSM® supplies you with standard and ESU-grades as well as company specific hot work steel and branded materials.

High speed steel
High-alloyed tool steel
High speed steel (HSS acc. to EN ISO 4957 HS) is a tool steel with a carbon proportion of up to 2,06 %. Alloyed with especially wolfram, molybdenum, vanadium, cobalt, nickel or titanium this tool steel is characterized by:
- Special hardness
- Temper resistance
- Wear resistance
- Heat resistant up to 600°C
- Corrosion resistant
High speed tools are mostly used in machining as a cutting material for tools like drills, saw blades, thread cutters, milling cutters, turning tools or many others.
We supply you with HSS-G, HSS-E as well as branded materials and special grades.
Overview of common high-speed steels
HSM® will be pleased to procure unalloyed tool steel for you; in addition, we will also undertake the machining on request.

Unalloyed tool steel
Carbon steel with resilient core
Unalloyed tool steel is characterized by its especially high proportion of carbon from 0,5 – 1,5% as well as by its resilience in the material’s core.
This steel’s surface hardness is often highly increased by a heat treatment including hardening and ensuing tempering. This steel is part of the group of cold work steels which should usually be processed at a temperature of below 200°C.
This carbon steel is mostly used in tool and mould making as well as in the food industry. HSM® is happy to supply you with unalloyed tool steel and moreover we organize heat treatment or processing if required.
